Spring is the time of the year for new beginnings. So what better time to do a detox than now! Internally, everyday toxins seep into the bloodstream and are delivered throughout the body. I had no idea how many toxins I was putting in my body on a daily basis. I learned immediately that I had to change my lifestyle…I didn’t have a choice. After learning that my body could no longer filter toxins due to stage IV non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, my life changed drastically. And that’s exactly why I created a toxin-free skincare line.
Many types of detox methods are available today. Chances are you may have tried herbal teas, a juice detox or, even for a few weeks, a raw food diet. These are all pretty popular and work great but let me tell you about some of my other favorites. These are just a few lesser known ways you can detox. Pick the ones that fit your lifestyle most importantly.
Detox Broth
This recipe for detox broth should be kept in a glass container and will keep up to five days in the refrigerator. Use what you have on hand though if you have to but try to work up to the recipe.
- 12 cups of spring water
- 8 cups of mixed organic vegetables: Carrots, burdock root, red beets, white or red onions, a whole bulb of garlic, sweet potatoes, shitake mushrooms, 2 tablespoons of powdered turmeric (or a couple inches of fresh turmeric root), spinach, and kale
- Fresh herbs and spices: Fresh cilantro, cayenne pepper (to taste), a stalk of lemongrass, a couple inches of ginger root, fresh oregano, fennel leaves, and black peppercorns.
Add above ingredients to a large pot and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about an hour. Drink one to three cups daily until gone.
Detox Bath
This is one of my favs! It’s a powerful antioxidant bath that pulls toxins deep within the muscle walls. Decreasing inflammation is an added benefit for a sore body. I do this 2-3x a week and then a 20 minute stretch. Here’s what you need:
- Hydrogen Peroxide – 3 pints
- Baking Soda – 2 cups
- Epson Salt -1 cup
- Lemon Essential Oil (preferably organic) – a few drops only
- Lavender Essential Oil (preferably organic) – 20 drops and keep it next to you by the tub to put some on your temples while in the bath
- Apple Cider Vinegar – 1 cup
- Ginger – a few inches of fresh ginger root, 2 ounces of ginger powder or a few drops of ginger essential oil
Soak for 30 minutes and drink LOTS of water while in the tub. Get out, relax, stretch, and enjoy a soothing night of rest.
Oil Pulling
This technique is very effective but it takes more of a commitment. However, that being said, you will feel the difference and some say they even see a difference immediately. It’s a technique that’s literally been around for centuries and it’s easy to do. It takes about 15-20 minutes but it goes by much quicker when I do it while in shower. There are SO many benefits of oil pulling, so I encourage you to Google it and learn more.
This involves taking organic, unrefined (if it’s available) sesame oil and swishing it in your mouth. You can also use virgin, unrefined, coconut oil if that’s all you have but it’s proven that sesame oil works the best.
I put it in a plastic squeeze bottle (like a honey bear) and place it in my shower. Squirt a tablespoon or so in your mouth and start swishing. You will feel it start to liquefy after about 15 minutes or so. That’s the important part. After about 15-20 minutes, spit it out. It’s that easy. Your teeth will feel cleaner and they say it also whitens your teeth. I personally noticed that as well. I brush right afterward. This is especially good for smokers to extract the toxins.
The White Onion Method
This is the easiest detox but the stinkiest. It’s also life changing!! This method was shared with me by a close friend when I had the flu. She absolutely raved about it and explained that it’s also super effective for colds and fevers. I thought, what could I lose and I tried it. I will admit I felt amazing! If you only choose one of these detox methods, please try this━ it’s so simple and so cheap!!!
The bottom of the feet are supposed to not only have direct access to your internal organs according to Chinese medicine, it’s also where the largest pores of your body are, so it makes sense. All I know is it worked for me and I encourage you to try it! This is what you do:
Get yourself a white onion. That’s the important part, but they say red onion works but supposedly not as powerful. I personally cannot confirm nor deny that fact.
How to do it, super easy slice the onion. Get some ankle socks and make sure they are tight. Place the sliced onions on the bottom of your feet and put on the socks. You may also wrap your feet with plastic wrap before you put on the socks.
So that’s my detox DIY and I hope you will try one or more. I would love to hear your experiences in the comment section below regarding how these worked for you, or if you should have any other great DIY detoxes to share. Let me know!
